MISSION STATEMENT

The Big She Bang is an all-day event of workshops, panel discussions, visual art, and music by and for womyn and womyn identified artists & community members. The Big She Bang was created in response to the desire for womyn to claim space in their creative communities.

The Big She Bang strives to cultivate a space for womyn to share creative endeavors, exchange ideas, and provide support in a safe and open-minded environment. It is a multimedia event that serves as a platform for womyn artists and activists.

In our third year, in the spirit of Jodi Tilton, we wish to address the ways in which our communities support each other in our everyday lives. Jodi Tilton was an integral organizer of The Big She Bang who passed away in July 2007. Specifically, this year, we will address the ways in which our community responds to illness.

The Big She-Bang was previously a celebration thrown by the Long Island Womyn’s Collective. Information on The Big She-Bang 1 & 2 can be found here: http://myspace.com/liwomynscollective

* Please note: Joe Carroll will be filming the event throughout the day as a contribution to the historical documentation of the Big She-Bang, and feminist organizing in New York. He is a student at Hunter who has previous experience documenting the Long Island D.I.Y. punk music scene and hopes to catch the art, music, panels, and tablers that will be present at the She-Bang. He will approach tablers and other participants throughout the day and ask if you would like to talk about your participation, but you are certainly free to decline if you would prefer not to appear on film. He hopes to work with the She-Bang collective to edit the material he gets into a short piece that will document the day both for us and for others who are interested in re-creating something similar in the future.
